Bishops Sweep Knights in Critical DH

Rocky Mount - The N.C. Wesleyan softball program faced Southern Virginia on Thursday in a crucial USA South DH. The Bishops took both games in dramatic fashion, including a walk-off five-run 7th. 

The Basics:

Scores: N.C. Wesleyan 6, Southern Virginia 5        N.C. Wesleyan 7, Southern Virginia 4

Records: N.C. Wesleyan (23-10, 8-4 USA South), Southern Virginia (17-13, 5-7 USA South)

How it Happened (Game 1):

  • After a scoreless four innings for the Battling Bishops, Lillie Baumbach singled and scored Ava Lowry to get Wesleyan on the board.

  • Coming in relief for the Lady Bishops, Avery Jordan got the victory and went five innings. Jordan allowed only three earned runs and walked only one Knight.

  • The 7th inning featured a terrific offensive comeback which started out with a lead-off single from Ava Lowry. She would be followed up by five straight singles that all scored runs. (Lillie Baumbach, Mary Katherine Raynor, Molly Alejandrino, Makayla Simmons, Savannah Thompson)

  • The walk-off was completed by Thompson's single in the 7th which capped off a 15-hit affair for the Lady Bishops.

How it Happened (Game 2):

  • The Bishop's offense was sparked by a five-run 3rd inning. The inning was led by a single from Lillie Baumbach that helped the three-hit inning. Moe Byerly also had a two-RBI single to extend the Wesleyan lead.

  • In the 6th inning, Wesleyan was able to get two more insurance runs to score their 7th run of the game. Lillie Baumbach drove in Ava Lowry who led the inning off with a double, and she was followed up by Molly Alejandrino who hit a sac-fly.

  • On the mound, Morgan Aycock got the win for the Bishops, tossing seven innings and striking out four Knights.
