Wesleyan Women's Rally Falls Short vs. SVU

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team fell short at home against new conference foe Southern Virginia University falling 76-66 Saturday evening.

The Lady Knights got off to a fast start against the Bishops running out to a 15-2 lead over the first few minutes. However, the Bishops would not be denied as their bench came in and lit a spark leading them on a prolonged 24-11 run to tie the game at 26 apiece with 8 minutes to play. After SVU got back up 37-33, Wesleyan added a free throw and a steal from senior guard Keorra Taylor before she made a layup while getting fouled for the AND 1 to tie the game at 37-all at the break. Wesleyan outscored the Knights 21-15 in the second quarter after SVU took the first 22-16.

A tightly contested third quarter first saw the Bishops get up 48-41 for their biggest lead of the game at 4:41 of the third before SVU went on to finish the quarter on a 11-3 to elad by one, 51-51, at the end of three. 

Unfortunately, SVU would start the fourth on a 10-0 run and go on to take it 24-15 and pick up the 10-point win. SVU improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference while Wesleyan falls to 4-4 and 2-1 in the league.

Senior guards Kayla Johnson and Taylor led the Bishops with each scoring 15 points apiece while Taylor also added a team-best 6 assists and 4 steals with 3 rebounds. Johnson scored all of her points on 5 threes as well, tying her season-high.

Junior guard Myesha Best also scored 10 points off the bench while forwards Nadia Simmons and Kayrisma Harrison each scored 9 points apiece. Simmons added 8 rebounds as well while Harrison had 9 rebounds with 2 steals and 2 blocks.

The Bishops will next be in action on Friday as they remain home to host Methodist at 3 PM.
