Women's Soccer falls at home to Southern VA

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's soccer team fell 5-1 at home in their conference opener on Saturday afternoon to new USA South foe Southern Virginia.

There were three goals scored within the opening 5 minutes of the game. SVU scored the first two goals in the 2nd and 4th minutes before Wesleyan freshman forward Caitlyn Butler struck right back with a Bishop goal in the 5th minute of action to pull NCWC to within 2-1. 

It would remain that way through the rest of the first half with SVU just holding a slim 5-4 lead at the break.

SVU then made it 3-1 early in the second half before adding two late insurance goals inthe 68th and 69th minutes of play to put the match away.

The goalkeeping duo of graduate senior Alicia Jacobs and junior Anna Yeakey combined for 4 saves in the loss as the Bishops were outshot 9-4 in the second half.

Butler's goal was her 6th of the season, but Wesleyan fell to 2-5-1 on the year and 0-1 in the East Division while SVU improves to 4-2-2.

The Lady Bishops will next head to Raleigh to face Meredith College on Tuesday evening at 7 PM.
