Bishop men and women earn split in hoops action

Rocky Mount, N.C. / Newport News, Va. - North Carolina Wesleyan's men's and women's basketball squads were both in action on Tuesday night, with the men hosting Mid-Atlantic Christian University and the women traveling to Newport News Apprentice. The Bishop men cruised to an 88-51 victory behind Cornelius Snow's game-high 17 points, while the Wesleyan women were paced by Tiffany Bell's 21 points in a tough 73-68 loss to the Builders.

In men's action, Snow connected on 6-of-8 attempts from the floor, including 5-of-6 shots from behind the arc, to lead Wesleyan to the decisive victory. Tied a 6-6 early in the first half, Snow's play off the bench sparked a 19-0 Bishop run that set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Wesleyan (3-1) shot 56 percent as a team and knocked down eight three-pointers on the night. Seniors Matt Dougherty and Justin Griffith complimented Snow with 13 points apiece, while Domarius Thomas chipped in ten points and six boards.

On the women's side, the Bishops (2-2) trailed 30-22 at the break but shot over 40 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes to pull within four at 69-65 with 1:53 remaining. An Apprentice (5-0) turnover gave Wesleyan the ball back, but a missed one-and-one followed by a pair of offensive rebounds did not result in any points for the Bishops, who were then forced to foul in the final minute.

The Builders proceeded to connect on 4-of-8 free throws to pad their lead, while the Bishops failed to get the big shot they needed to cut into the deficit. A three-pointer by Bell inside of 10 seconds provided the 73-68 final.

Joining Bell in double-figures were sophomores A'leisha Henderson and Shanice Goree with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Samantha Urquhart pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Wesleyan's men return to action this weekend at the 4th Annual Southern Shootout hosted by the University of Mary Washington. The Bishops will take on the host Eagles on Saturday at 7:00pm, which will be followed by a 1:00pm match-up with Hampden-Sydney on Sunday.  NCWC's women open up USA South play next Wednesday night at home when Peace College visits Everett Gymnasium for a 7:30pm contest.
