Soccer, Volleyball Drop Trio of League Matches

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's and women's soccer teams of North Carolina Wesleyan dropped a pair of USA South matches to Methodist University on Wednesday, while the Battling Bishop volleyball team suffered a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Christopher Newport later in the evening.

In men's soccer action at Scalf Field, head coach Frankie Taal honored his 2012 senior class (Julian Mingo-Gonzalez, Christian Boakye, John Mendy and Marcelo Prata) prior to NCWC's match with the Monarchs. With a chance to clinch a share of the USA South regular season championship, the Bishops (9-3-2, 5-2-1 USA South) dropped to the 4th seed by virtue of a 2-1 loss.

Sophomore Alambi Clarke had tied the match at 1-1 early in the second half, but MU's Chris Ryan bent in a shot from the corner in the 60th minute for the eventual gamewinner. The Monarchs out-shot the Bishops 16-11 on the day and held an 11-2 advantage in corners.

Wesleyan also fell to Methodist in women's soccer action in Fayetteville. The two squads were in a battle for the league's 8th and final seed for next week's USA South Tournament, and the Monarchs secured the berth with a 2-0 win. MU out-shot NCWC 20-8 on the day, thereby ending the Bishops' 2012 season at 6-10-1 overall.

Finally, N.C. Wesleyan's volleyball team hoped to pull off an upset of 5th-ranked CNU to force a three-way tie atop the conference standings. The talented Captains, however, had other ideas with set scores of 25-5, 25-11 and 25-14.

CNU turned in a team hitting percentage of .522 with 42 kills to the Bishops' 18. Anna Hart, Kristi Lucas and Taylor Johnson managed four kills apiece for the Bishops, who are now 18-9 overall, 7-2 in league play.

As the 4th seed in the men's soccer tournament, Wesleyan will host a first round match with 5th-seeded Greensboro on Saturday at 2:30pm at Scalf Field. NCWC's volleyball team will wrap up regular season play this weekend at Piedmont.
