Battling Bishops Wrap Up Weekend Athletics Action

Rocky Mount, N.C. - Four Battling Bishop squads combined for ten different athletic events this weekend, seven of which involved USA South Conference competition.

Kicking off their spring schedule, Wesleyan's golfers turned in a 7th-place finish out of ten teams at the Echo Farms Intercollegiate hosted by Mars Hill College. Senior Allen-Michael Wilson paced the Bishops with rounds of 74 and 75 to finish at 5-over and tie for 4th-place among the 53-man field. Junior Chris Freeman also turned in a top-15 finish with rounds of 77 and 75 to finish three strokes behind Wilson.

In baseball, the Bishops suffered a three-game sweep at USA South preseason favorite Covenant College, dropping 12-6, 10-0 and 5-2 decisions. Sophomore Jason Riley faired well offensively with a 6-for-11 showing at the plate in the series.

Elsewhere in league action, NCWC's lacrosse team opened up conference play on the road at Huntingdon and LaGrange. The Bishops fell to the Hawks by a 21-5 score on Saturday before dropping a tough 13-11 match to the Panthers on Sunday. Freshman Molly Lewis led all players with nine goals, 13 draws and six groundballs over the two-game set.

Finally at Edge Field, Wesleyan softball opened USA South play with Averett University on Saturday. After dropping the opener by a 6-3 score, the Bishops took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh in game two. Unfortunately, the Cougars would plate two to force extras and eventually secure a 10-6 victory. Wesleyan went on to drop a pair of games to non-conference foe Emory & Henry on Sunday by 2-1 and 9-0 scores.
