Battling Bishops Wrap Up Opening Weekend

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's men's soccer team fell 3-0 to 8th-ranked York College (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the opening weekend of the 2013-2014 athletics season in the process. NCWC's volleyball and women's soccer had previously kicked off their respective slates on Saturday.

On Sunday at York, the Bishops narrowly missed an early 1-0 lead when Halldor Bjarneyjarson's shot at the 7:49 mark hit the crossbar. The Spartans proceeded to take a 2-0 lead into the break with goals in the 26th and 30th minutes. An insurance goal at 57:50 provided the final score.

York out-shot the Bishops 17-7 on the day and held a 6-3 advantage in corners. Freshman goalie Drew Thompson took the loss after making six stops in goal.

On Saturday, Wesleyan's women suffered the same 3-0 fate at the hands of Salem College, while the NCWC volleyball team dropped a pair of sweeps to Randolph-Macon and St. Mary's (Md.) on the road.

All three teams will attempt to rebound this week, beginning on Wednesday when women's soccer (0-1) and volleyball (0-2) travel to Randolph and Mary Washington, respectively. Men's soccer (1-1) will return to the pitch next weekend at the Virginia Wesleyan Classic. The Bishops will face Mary Washington on Saturday and Baldwin Wallace on Sunday, both at 5:00pm.
