Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's men's soccer team completed this weekend's athletics action on Sunday afternoon, battling to a 2-2 double overtime draw with Baldwin Wallace College in Virginia Beach. Previously on Saturday, both the men's and women's teams dropped tough 1-0 matches, while volleyball completed day two of the Johns Hopkins Classic.
In men's soccer, the Bishops rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Mary
Washington on Saturday by tying a talented Baldwin Wallace team,
2-2. BW had taken a 1-0 lead at the 23:17 mark
before NCWC tied the match at 1-1 minutes later when Torben
Vennemann headed home his first goal of
the season via a Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson corner. The
score remained tied at halftime.
The Battling Bishops took a 2-1 lead at the 55:23 mark when they
were credited with an own goal, but the Yellow Jackets countered
with their second goal in the 74th minute. The two teams proceeded
to fight through a pair of scoreless 10-minute overtime
sessions.
The Battling Bishops (1-2-1) outshot the Yellow Jackets by an 18-14 count, but BW had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman goalie Drew Thompson made five saves.
In women's soccer on Saturday, Wesleyan (1-2) dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 match to Randolph-Macon College. Sophomore goalie Haley Hopkins looked poised to secure her second straight shutout before R-MC's Katherine Schwalen chipped her with just over three minutes left in regulation. Hopkins finished with seven stops on the day.
Finally, NCWC volleyball dropped four matches at Johns Hopkins University. The Bishops were led by freshman Tori Stewart, who garnered All-Tournament honors after tallying 30 kills and six blocks over the four-match span.
Volleyball returns to action on Tuesday at Salem College, while women's soccer travels to Warren Wilson next Saturday. Men's soccer resumes play on September 18th when the Bishops host Christopher Newport.
