Danville, Va. / Demorest, Ga. - Four Battling Bishop squads were in action on Sunday afternoon, all of which involved USA South Conference competition.

The Battling Bishop men's and women's tennis teams opened up league play with a pair of dominating wins at Averett University. Wesleyan's women were 8-1 winners, surrendering a mere three games in singles and doubles combined, while the men cruised to a 9-0 sweep.

On the women's side, NCWC raced out to a 3-0 lead in doubles play with 8-0, 8-1 and 8-0 wins. Newcomers Maria Fernanda Orona, Valeria Berber and Sofia Prado were then 6-0, 6-0 winners in singles play, with sophomore Natalia Lopez and freshman Sofia Gonzalez earning 6-1, 6-0 wins. The Cougars' lone point came by default at #2 singles.

In men's action, the Bishops ran its streak of consecutive wins against USA South competition to 56 matches... a feat that dates back to the 2009 season. The duos of Robert Kjellberg/Sebastian Sikh and Fernando Nardelli/Eduardo Ugalde helped the Bishops to a quick 3-0 lead with 8-2 and 8-1 doubles victories, and all four proceeded to tally straight-set wins in singles play. Freshmen Fabio Pereira and Andres Gomez completed the sweep with impressive wins at the #3 and #5 positions.

NCWC's softball team was also in action at Averett, taking the undefeated Cougars (12-0-1) down to the wire. After dropping the opener by a 6-3 score, the Bishops took a 7-6 advantage into the final inning of game two. Unfortunately, AU was able to force extras with an unearned run in their final at-bat. Playing the international tiebreak rule, the Cougars plated the winning run in the 8th, again unearned. Senior Kendra Hoes and freshman Kaitlyn Checkan paced the Bishops with four hits apiece over the two-game span.

Lastly on Sunday, Wesleyan's baseball team wrapped up its three-game league series at Piedmont College. The Lions secured the sweep with a 14-8 win, which followed 8-7 (11 innings) and 13-5 wins on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Sophomore Justin DiSanto paced the Bishop offense with a .455 batting average (4-for-11) during the series.
