Bishop Men Knock Off Methodist, Women Fall in OT

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The men's and women's soccer teams of North Carolina Wesleyan hosted a USA South doubleheader with rival Methodist University on Wednesday afternoon at Scalf Field. The Battling Bishop men scored a trio of second half goals to seal a 3-1 victory in the opener, while NCWC's women dropped a tough 2-1 overtime decision to the Monarchs in the nightcap.

In the men's match, the Bishops and Monarchs battled through a scoreless first half that saw each team tally five shots. Sophomore Charles Chapin got Wesleyan on the board early in the second half by booting home a Julius Oskarsson assist in the 48th minute. Methodist later answered at the 68:07 mark with an unassisted tally by Chris Ryan, who blasted a one-timer past NCWC keeper Jesper Olsson off a failed clear.

The game seemed destined for overtime until the Bishops (7-4-1, 3-1 USA South) netted a pair of scores in the final ten minutes of regulation. Sebastian Wiiala flicked a ball to fellow sophomore Caetano Viegas for the eventual gamewinner in the 82nd minute, then junior Matt Moore tallied an insurance score with 2:50 remaining, assisted by Oskarsson.

MU (6-2-1, 1-2 USA South) finished with a slim 11-10 edge in shots. Olsson notched two saves en route to the win in net, while Monarch keeper Alex Rabone managed four stops in the losing effort.

On the women's side, Methodist took a 1-0 advantage into the half thanks to a Deycasha Miller unassisted score in the 32nd minute. Wesleyan's Rebecca Staylor, however, would notch the equalizer at the 52:45 mark, assisted by Cissi Edehult.

With both teams missing out on scoring opportunities in regulation, the two squads entered overtime with the Monarchs holding a 9-6 lead in shots. Bishop sophomore Logan Bill got off the first shot in extra time, blasting a shot that was saved by MU keeper Taylor Ross, her fourth stop of the day. Unfortunately, MU's Taylor Cavazos got off the only other shot of the period, which resulted in a Golden Goal assisted by Sara Snotherly.

Methodist (3-5-1, 2-1-1 USA South) led the shot count 10-7 for the match, although the Bishops (5-4-1, 1-2-1 USA South) held a 5-4 edge in shots-on-goal.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday at league foe Ferrum College. The men's match is slated for a 2:00pm start, followed by the women at 4:00pm.
