USA South Announces Postseason Tennis Awards

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2016 postseason awards in men's and women's tennis. N.C. Wesleyan had a trio of players garner First Team honors, including Valeria Berber, Sebastian Sikh, and Ioannis Brokakis.

On the men's side, Brokakis collected Conference Rookie of the Year honors after posting a 14-7 singles record with a 6-0 mark in USA South play, primarily anchoring the #2 position. The Heraklion, Greece native also performed well in doubles action, where he saw time at every seed and compiled a 14-5 overall mark with a perfect 6-0 slate in the league. For his efforts this season, Brokakis collected First Team All-Conference honors.

He was joined on the First Team by last year's Rookie of the Year, Sebastian Sikh. Sikh's sophomore campaign saw the Eskilstuna, Sweden native man the #1 seed in both singles and doubles. He has racked up a team-best 16 singles wins thusfar, which includes a 5-1 mark versus league opponents.

Junior Mark Sokolov and freshman J.D. Telles rounded out Wesleyan's honorees as Honorable Mention selections. Sokolov went undefeated in USA South play at 7-0, while Telles went 6-1 against USA South competition. Additionally, Telles was named to the league's All-Sportsmanship team.

Around the conference, a total of 27 student-athletes garnered recognition. In addition to Brokakis' major award, Covenant's Matthew Harvie was named Player of the Year and Methodist's Mark Tarentino earned Coach of the Year honors.

On the women's side, Berber improved on her Second Team honor last spring by garnering First Team accolades this season. The senior from La Piedad, Mexico anchored top-seeded singles and doubles for the Bishops the entire season, going 10-1 in conference singles and 8-3 in league doubles. Her doubles partner, freshman Stephany Barbera, joined her as a Second Team selection after turning in a 10-1 USA South mark at #2 singles. Additionally, Barbera represented the Battling Bishops on the All-Sportsmanship team.

Also earning Second Team recognition was sophomore Florencia Sorrentino, who manned #3 singles and #2 doubles. Sorrentino led the team with 19 singles wins this season, going 11-1 in conference play. Rounding out Wesleyan's honorees were Honorable Mention players Ana Diaz and Andrea Tobar. In conference play, Diaz went 11-1 at primarily the #4 seed and joined with Sorrentino for an 8-3 record at #2 doubles. Tobar went 8-1 at #5 singles while posting a 5-2 mark at #3 doubles.

In total, 29 student-athletes garnered recognition around the USA South. Averett's Heidi Sarkkinen swept the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, while Covenant's John Hirte was named Coach of the Year.
