Rocky Mount, N.C. - Freshman Stephen Bardswick and sophomore Allen-Michael Wilson secured the 2012 Don Scalf Invitational trophy by winning a two-hole playoff versus Surry on Monday afternoon at the Golf Club of Rocky Mount. Having ended the two-round event with identical 657 team scores, each squad sent its top finishers back on the course with Bardswick and Wilson representing the Battling Bishops.

Both NCWC and Surry combined for 12 strokes on the first hole, which forced play to a very difficult par-4 second hole. An out-of-bounds opening drive by Surry opened the door for Bardswick and Wilson, whose bogeys were good enough to take the trophy.

Individually, Bardswick turned in a runner-up finish in the field of 18 by carding rounds of 77 and 79. He finished one stroke behind medalist Julio Gonzalez of Louisburg College, whose 74 on Monday was the low round of the tourney. Wilson shot a two-day 162, highlighted by a low round of 78 on Monday.

Also scoring for NCWC were Lucas Norman, Darren Lau and Stefan Hauksson. Senior Owen White competed in his first collegiate tournament as an individual.

The two-day event was held at the par-72 Golf Club of Rocky Mount and is named for long-time staff member and friend of the College, Don Scalf. Scalf taught for 36 years and coached for 18 at the College, serving as Athletic Director for six years. During his coaching career, his teams won Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (now USA South) championships in basketball (1966) and golf (1970, 1971, 1972, 1973).  His prowess as a golf coach, in fact, earned him DIAC Coach of the Year honors on four occasions.

Scalf was a member of North Carolina Wesleyan's inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame class in 1999, and NCWC's "Scalf Field" for soccer/lacrosse and "Don Scalf Court" for basketball/volleyball are named in honor of his dedication to Battling Bishop athletics.

The Bishops will compete at the Barton Intercollegiate next week, which will be held at the nearby Wilson Country Club.
