Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's golf team hosted its annual Don Scalf Invitational on Sunday and Monday, and for the second straight season, the Battling Bishops were able to take the team championship. Sophomore Lucas Norman fought adverse conditions to card rounds of 70 and 75 to finish at 1-over par and secure medalist honors for the second time in his collegiate career.

The two-day event was held at the par-72 Belmont Lake Golf Club. The Bishops faced off with Louisburg College and dominated with team rounds of 303 and 305 to finish at 32-over par, which placed them over 100 strokes ahead of the Hurricanes.

Individually, Wesleyan grabbed the top four positions as Norman, Allen-Michael Wilson, Stephen Bardswick and Darren Lau ranked one through four, respectively, among the 12-man field. Wilson turned in rounds of 78 and 74 to finish one stroke ahead of Bardswick at 8-over, while Lau shot an 80 and 78 to finish at +14.

Also competing for the Bishops was Tommy Nakamura (81-82), as well as Jarrett Hagler (85-80) and Raul de Leon (86-85) playing as individuals.

The annual tournament is named in honor of Don Scalf, an icon of Battling Bishop athletics who taught for 36 years, coached for 18 years and served as Athletics Director for six years at the College. During his coaching career, Scalf's teams won Conference championships in basketball (1966) and golf (1970, 1971, 1972, 1973), earning him Conference Coach of the Year honors on four occasions.

In addition to the golf team's Don Scalf Invitational, N.C. Wesleyan's "Scalf Field" for soccer/lacrosse and "Don Scalf Court" for basketball/volleyball are also named in his honor, as well as the USA South's Don Scalf Award for the top male and female student-athletes in the conference.
