Wesleyan Golf Hosts, Wins Don Scalf Invitational

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's golf team hosted its annual Don Scalf Invitational on Sunday and Monday, and for the third straight season, the Battling Bishops were able to take the team championship. Junior Lucas Norman fought adverse conditions to card rounds of 74 and 75 to finish at 5-over par and repeat as the event's medalist.

The two-day event was held at the par-72 Belmont Lake Golf Club and featured host NCWC, Apprentice School, Johnston Community College, Marymount University and William Peace. The Bishops dominated with team rounds of 306 and 315, which placed them 33 strokes ahead of second-place Apprentice.

Individually, Wesleyan secured four of the top five positions among the 24-man field with Norman, Stephen Bardswick, Chris Freeman and Allen-Michael Wilson. Bardswick finished third with rounds of 79 and 76, which placed him four strokes ahead of Freeman and Wilson who tied for fourth with a two-day 159 (+15).

Also competing for the Bishops was sophomore Tommy Nakamura in 10th place (81-83), as well as freshman Matthew May (95-89) competing individually.

The annual tournament is named in honor of Don Scalf, an icon of Battling Bishop athletics who taught for 36 years, coached for 18 years and served as Athletics Director for six years at the College. During his coaching career, Scalf's teams won Conference championships in basketball (1966) and golf (1970, 1971, 1972, 1973), earning him Conference Coach of the Year honors on four occasions.

In addition to the golf team's Don Scalf Invitational, N.C. Wesleyan's "Scalf Field" for soccer/lacrosse and "Don Scalf Court" for basketball/volleyball are also named in his honor, as well as the USA South's Don Scalf Award for the top male and female student-athletes in the conference.
