JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The 17th ranked NC Wesleyan men's golf team finished in a tie for 2nd place at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship Sunday on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Battling Bishops shot a 7-over-par 299 on Sunday, to finish in a tie for second place with Hampden Sydney College (Va.) with a three-day total of 871 (7-over).

Senior Grady Anderson ended up finishing in a tie for 2nd place overall with teammate Dustin Wood who also shot a three-day total of -3 under par 213. Anderson shot a -4 under 66 on the par-70 Scarlet Course in the first round on Friday before he fell back some with a +2 over 75 on the more difficult Gold Course on Saturday. He then shot a -1 under 72 back on the Gold on Sunday to place 2nd. Wood, playing as an individual, shot rounds of -3 under 67, 72, and  74 on the weekend to tie with Anderson. Both players finished 9 strokes back of champion Larkin Gross of Methodist who shot a -12 under 204.

As a team, The Bishops shot a very impressive top score of 268 on Friday in the first round on the par 70 Scarlet Course to lead the pack before shooting a 304 on the more difficult par 73 Gold Course in round two. The Bishops sat in a tie for third overall and just 4 strokes back heading into the final day on Sunday where the 29 teams were narrowed down to the top 16. Wesleyan would then shoot a 299, the 3rd-best round on Sunday while #5 Methodist would go on to win the tournament by shooting a 295 and 863 for the week.

NC Wesleyan had 4 individuals shoot in the 60s on Friday in the opening round. Anderson led the way with his aforementioned 66 while freshman Frankie Schmitt and junior Luke Thornton each shot -3 under 67. Senior Mariano Silvestri then scored a -2 under 68 while Junior Nico Strafe also shot a 70 in the first round. 

Silvestri and Thornton would end up each tying for a 10th place finish as Silvestri shot an impressive 72 in the final round Sunday, but a 78 on Saturday to finish at 218. Thornton shot rounds of 73 and 78 on the Gold course as well to end up at +2 over 218.

Schmitt then placed 26th with a +6 over 222 after rounds of 78 and 77 on the Gold Course while Strafe shot 81 and 80 on the tougher course for a 231 and 56th place finish.

The Bishop golfers will next head to LaGrange, GA for the USA South Conference Championship from April 25-27 at Highland CC.
