Bishop Golf Finishes Third at USA South Championships

LAGRANGE, Ga. - The #16 NC Wesleyan Men's Golf team finished in third place at the USA South Championships that were held this week at the Highland Country Club in LaGrange, GA.

The defending tournament champion Bishops shot an 8-over 296 in the final round to go along with their 293 on day one and the second-best score of day two with a 290 to finish with a 15-over par 879 on the week.

2nd ranked Huntingdon College (Ala.) shot a 23-under 841 to win by 26 strokes over runner-up Methodist University.

The Bishops were led by all-conference second team senior Mariano Silvestri's 2-under 214 (71-72-71) to finish in a tie for 4th place while also being named to the all-tournament team.

All-Conference first teamer Senior Grady Anderson then shot a 74 on Saturday to finish at 5-over par 221 and finish in a tie for 16th after his first two days of 72 and 75.

Junior Dustin Wood then tied for 18th place at 6-over par 222 after falling back some with his third round 78. Wood shot a first round 73 and a second round 1-under 71 to shoot the best Bishop round on Friday.

Freshman Frankie Schmitt finished in 22nd place with a 9-over par 225 after his third round 76. Schmitt shot a 77 and an even par 72. Junior Luke Thornton finished in 33rd place with a 14-over 230 (79-76-75) as he steadily improved each day. 

Individually, tournament medalist honors were captured by Huntingdon's Drew Mathers who tallied a three-day total of 205 which was 11-under par and is the lowest total since the League's tournament expanded to three rounds in 2009.
