Martinsville, Va. - Christopher Newport forward Winston Mattheisen tallied the match's lone goal in the 47th minute to lift his top-seeded Captains to a 1-0 victory over 2nd-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan in the title game of the 2011 USA South Men's Soccer Tournament at the Smith River Sports Complex. The win earns the Captains their third consecutive USA South tournament championship and leaves the Bishops with a 7-5-6 overall record at season's end.

For his championship-winning goal, Mattheisen collected Tournament Most Valuable Player accolades for the second consecutive season. Four Bishops garnered post-tourney honors, including Vinnie De La Cueva and Ritchie Duffie in the midfield, as well as Justin Wolf on defense. Alberto Faisca was tabbed the All-Tournament goalie after making 13 saves over two matches.

The Captains out-shot the Bishops 16-10 in the match and held a 9-3 advantage in corners. Wesleyan managed a trio of shots at the equalizer in the final five minutes of play, with one hitting the crossbar and one being saved by CNU keeper Justin Wolfe. The other was blocked with less than a minute remaining, but the Bishops were unable to get a shot off on the ensuing corner.

The match marked the end of the careers of seniors Adama George, Robert Bass, Owen White, Stefan Hauksson, Bradley Myles and Wolf.

With the victory, the Captains claim the USA South's automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. The entire All-Tournament team is listed below.
