Bishops Take Season Opener over Bridgewater, 2-1

Rocky Mount, N.C. – The Battling Bishop men's soccer team opened its 2013 season on Friday afternoon, securing a 2-1 win over Bridgewater College at Scalf Field. Freshman Samba Cande tallied the eventual gamewinner on a through ball from Lucas Gundermann in the 57th minute to help Wesleyan move to 1-0 on the season.

The Bishops fell behind early in the first period when the Eagles scored on a free kick from Adrian Zamora in the 12th minute. Wesleyan responded minutes later with a penalty kick goal from freshman Daniel Kamdem for a 1-1 tie at the break.

Cande's goal early in the second half was backed by a stellar defensive effort.  After making four saves in the first half, freshman goalie Drew Thompson only faced one shot in the second half as his defenders dominated play. The Bishops out-shot the Eagles 20-8 on the day, with Thompson picking up his first collegiate win.

The Bishops travel to York College (Pa.) on Saturday for a key match-up with the 8th-ranked Spartans. The match is slated for a 2:00pm kickoff.
