Wesleyan Men Fall to Covenant in Tourney Semifinals

Martinsville, Va. - The Battling Bishop men's soccer team of North Carolina Wesleyan saw its 2014 season come to an end on Friday in the USA South Tournament semifinal round. The 3rd-seeded Bishops fell to 2nd-seeded Covenant by a 2-1 score in Martinsville to finish with a 13-6-1 overall record, the best season in the four-year tenure of head coach Frankie Taal.

The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the first half on goal in the 17th minute by USA South Player of the Year Snoopy Davidson, and he would later make it 2-0 with another tally at 78:24. The Bishops, however, made it interesting down the stretch with a goal by sophomore Cataeno Viegas just 23 seconds later to make it 2-1. Senior Jordan Grantz was credited with an assist on the play.

Wesleyan proceeded to get off a trio of shots at the equalizer in the final 10 minutes, the most notable coming from sophomore Charles Chapin with 2:57 to go. Chapin delivered a rocket from 15 yards that seemed destined for the top right pocket. Unfortunately for Bishop fans, Scot keeper Daniel Kubin made an unbelievable save to tip the ball away and protect the 2-1 final.

Both keepers turned in stellar performances, with Kubin notching a pair of key saves and NCWC freshman Jesper Olsson tallying six stops. The Scots held a slim 14-12 advantage in shots on the day, while the Bishops managed a 7-6 lead in corners.

With a goal and two assists in the tourney, Viegas was named to the 2014 USA South All-Tournament team at forward.
