Wesleyan Men's Tennis Team Competes at ITA Fall Regional

Sewanee, Tenn. - The men's tennis team of North Carolina Wesleyan competed at the ITA Fall Regional over the weekend. The Bishops were led by sophomores J.D. Telles and Ioannis Brokakis, who each advanced to the Round of 16 in Main Draw singles action.

Telles advanced to the Sweet 16 thanks to straight-set wins over players from Centre and LaGrange, while Brokakis won in similar fashion against players from Millsaps and Rhodes. Unfortunately, both were ousted by opponents from perennial powerhouse Emory University.

In the Main Consolation bracket, Mark Sokolov earned a championship win in his section by cruising to three straight wins versus Centre, Berry, and Rhodes. Henry Lam also faired well in his section, picking up a pair of victories over players from Methodist and Centre before falling to Millsaps' Friedler in his section championship.

The B Singles Blue Draw saw a pair of Bishops dominate the field as Jaime Ortega and Nicolas Malinauskas went 6-0 to earn a championship appearance against each other! The teammates elected not to play the match to keep their perfect weekend records in tact.

The Bishops did not fair as well in doubles play. Ortega teamed with David Appelquist for an impressive 8-2 opening round win over Methodist in the B Draw, but eventually fell to host Sewanee's Owen/Gallimore in round two. Owen/Gallimore went on to win the B Draw championship.

Wesleyan wraps up the fall portion of its schedule on October 8th at the Barton College Invitational.
