Men's Tennis Starts off Fall Season with Numerous Individual Wins

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.- The NC Wesleyan College Men's Tennis team brought home numerous individual singles and doubles titles from their season-opening fall event at the Methodist University Invitational over the weekend.

In all, NCWC won four doubles titles and nine singles titles including a few times where Wesleyan had both finalists in their respective brackets.

The Bishops won titles in #1 Doubles with Aditya Iyer and Jesus Gil, #2 Doubles with Giannis Brokakis and Roberto Puig, #4 Doubles with Ingmar Remerswaal and Juan Vallejo, and lastly #5 Doubles with Jordan Evans and Fayz Mavlyudov. Wesleyan was so dominant in the #5 Doubles bracket that they swept the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place positions as well. Richard Gende and Max Robinson were the runner-ups while Rodrigo Lopez and Stan Martherus were third.

In Singles, leading the way with individual titles were Roberto Puig in #2 Singles as he beat teammate Jhonny Acosta in the finals, Juan Vallejo in #4 Singles, Aditya Iyer in #5 Singles, Fayz Mavlyudov in #6 Singles, Nikita Revin in #7 Singles, and Ingmar Remerswaal in #8 Singles as he also beat a Wesleyan teammate, Gende, in the finals. Julian Siebert also won gold in #11 Singles as well.

Other than the aforementioned other two all-Bishop Finals there were also two more all-Wesleyan finals in #10 and #12 Singles. Freshman Nacho Rodriguez won the title in #10 Singles while the #12 Singles final between the NCWC competitors, Lopez and Ilya Skobelev, was not contested.

Among the Div. II schools competing were the University of Mount Olive (N.C.), Barton College, and Belmont Abbey College (N.C.) while the Div. III schools included Guilford College (N.C.), Peace University, Averett (Va.) and of course Methodist.

The men are next in action from Sept. 21-23 at two different events. Half of the team will go to Rome, GA for the ITAs while the other half will go to the Elon Invitational at Elon College, NC.
