Men's Tennis Sweeps Home Opener

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team opened up their dual match season at home on Saturday with two non-conference wins each by the score of 7-2 over Div. II Barton College and Div. III Hampden-Sydney College (Va.).

In the 7-2 win over Barton, senior Ioannis Brokakis led the way with a 7-6, 6-3 win at #2 singles while Wesleyan also pulled out individual wins at #4, #5, and #6 singles while also sweeping all three doubles matches.

Freshman Juan Vallejo won 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles, freshman Jhonny Acosta then won 6-3, 6-3 at #5 singles while freshman Juan Diego Telles won 6-3 and 6-2 at #6 singles. However, sophomore Roberto Puig lost a tough three-setter at #1 singles falling 6-7, 7-6, 6-10 to  Barton's Diego Aguedelo.

Puig and Brokakis then dominated #1 doubles by winning 8-1 while Vallejo and Telles won 8-4 in #2 doubles. Junior Ingmar Remerswaal and sophomore Aditya Iyer then won 8-4 as well in #3 doubles.

In the win over HSC, the men used wins from 5 freshmen including Nikita Revin at #1 singles (4-6, 6-3, 10-7), Fayz Mavlydov at #3 singles (6-0, 6-4), Max Robinson at #4 singles (6-3, 6-2), Kevin Thour at #5 singles (6-2, 6-0), and Ignacio Mercado at #6 singles (6-4, 6-2).

The Bishops also won by identical scores of 8-4 at #2 and #3 doubles. Revin and Mavlydov won at #2 Doubles while Thour and Robinson won at #3 Doubles.

The men, now 2-0, are next in action on Friday when they begin conference play with a doubleheader match at Greensboro College.
