Men's Tennis Ousts Johns Hopkins

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 15th ranked NC Wesleyan College Men's Tennis team continued their road swing in Virginia knocking off 16th ranked non-conference foe John Hopkins University (Md.) 7-2 in a neutral-site matchup on the campus of CNU on Saturday.

The men were led by sweeping the doubles pairings 3-0 with senior Ioannis Brokakis and sophomore Roberto Puig leading the way with a tight 8-7 win (7-4 in the tiebreaker) in #1 doubles. The pairing of freshman Jhonny Acosta and junior Ingmar Remerswaal also won a tight doubles match 8-7 and also 7-4 in the tiebreaker in #2 doubles. Wesleyan's #3 doubles team of Jesus Gil and Aditya Iyer then dominated 8-1 in their match.

In Singles matchups, Wesleyan was led by winners from Puig and freshman Juan Vallejo in three sets while Ayer and Acosta won in straight sets. Puig won 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 in #2 singles while Vallejo won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in #4 singles. Ayer then won 6-2, 7-6 in #3 singles with Acosta winning 7-6, 6-4 in #6 singles.

Wesleyan improves to 5-1 on the season while JHU drops to 0-1. Wesleyan is back in action on Sunday at home to host West Virginia Wesleyan at approx. 4:30 PM if weather permits. Otherwise, NC Wesleyan will have a split squad match on Tuesday hosting Mount Olive at 2 PM and traveling to Greensboro College at Noon.
