Men's Tennis Clinches 11th Straight Conference Title

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The 22nd ranked NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team clinched their 11th straight conference championship on Wednesday as they defeated rival Methodist University 7-2 on the road. The Bishops improve to 19-2 overall and complete conference season at 10-0.

The men started off the match by winning two out of 3 doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. The top pairing of senior 19th ranked Giannis Brokakis and sophomore 20th ranked Roberto Puig led the Bishops by winning their doubles match 8-6 and their singles matches.  Brokakis won 7-6, 6-3 at #1 singles while Puig won 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 at the second line.

Freshman Juan Vallejo and senior Richard Gende then won 8-3 at the third doubles line. Vallejo suffered a tough 3-set singles loss 1-6, 6-4, 10-12 while fellow freshmen Jhonny Acosta and Fayz Mavlyudov then cruised by in their respective singles matches. Acosta won 6-0, 6-2 at #4 singles while Mavlyudov won 6-0, 6-0 at the 6th line. Senior J.D. Telles also won 6-1, 6-0 at the 5th line.

Methodist falls to 10-11 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

Wesleyan will next head to D-2 foe Belmont Abbey (N.C.) on Tuesday at 11:00 am in an exhibition match before heading to the conference tournament in Georgia next weekend.
