Men's Tennis Defeat #42 Belmont Abbey in Exhibition

BELMONT, N.C. - The 23rd ranked NC Wesleyan men's tennis team played #42 D-2 foe Belmont Abbey Colllege in an exhibition match last Tuesday as a warm-up for their conference tournament last weekend and came away with three non-conference exhibition wins, 4-3, and then two 7-0 matches against BAC's second and third teams.

The men lost the doubles bouts 2-1 as BAC got one point. The pair of senior Giannis Brokakis and sophomore Roberto Puig fell 6-2 at the top spot while the pairing of junior Ingmar Remmerswaal and freshman Jhonny Acosta fell 6-4 at #2. The 3rd doubles team of freshman Juan Vallejo and sophomore Adi Iyer then won 6-3 but it was not enough. Seniors J.D. Telles and Richard Gende also won 7-6 in their exhibition doubles match as well.

In singles, Puig, the USA South Player of the Year, led the men with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at #2 singles while Telles won 6-1, 6-2 at #5 singles. Acosta and freshman Nikita Revin then each won three-setters. Acosta won his 6-2, 6-7, 11-9 while Revin won 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 to clinch the match 4-3 for the Bishops. Freshmen Fayz Mavlydov and Ignacio Rodriguez also won their exhibition bouts 8-4 and 8-2.

NCWC 7, BAC 0

In NC Wesleyan's second match of the day vs. the Crusaders, the Bishops won 7-0 led by a 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 sweep in doubles and five singles wins in straight sets as well as a three-setter at #2 singles. Iyer and Vallejo domiinated to win 6-1 at #1 doubles while Telles and Remmerswaal won 6-2 at #3 doubles. Brokakis and Acosta won 7-5 at the second doubles spots as well.

In singles, Iyer led at the top spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win  while Vallejo won 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 for the win at #2. Acosta then won 6-4 6-1 at #3, Telles won 6-0, 6-2 at #4, Revin won 6-2, 6-2 at #5 and Remmerswaal took the last win 6-1, 7-5 at #6.

NCWC 7, BAC 0

The final match of the day also had the Bishops' second team winning 7-0 against Belmont's third team. Wesleyan again swept all the doubles, 6-3 by Puig and junior Nadeem Jaber, 7-5 by Gende and Revin and finally 6-3 by Mavlydov and Ignacio Mercado on the third line.

At singles, Puig led the way at the top line with a 6-1, 6-1 win while Mavlydov won 6-1, 6-4 at #2 singles. Freshman Jordan Evans then won 6-1, 6-2 at #3 singles while Jaber easily won 6-1, 6-0 at #4. Gende then won 6-1, 6-0 at #5 while Mercado won 6-1, 6-3 at #6.

The men are 21-2 on the season and will now await their Nationals opponent and location when the draw is released on Monday.
