Men's Tennis Sweeps All-Conference Awards

The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2019 All-Conference awards for men's tennis as N.C. Wesleyan College swept the individual awards for the second consecutive season. Roberto Puig was named Player of the Year, Juan Vallejo earned Rookie of the Year and their coach, Albie Brice was named Coach of the Year to round out the individual honors. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team.

All awards are voted on by the men's tennis coach at each institution. The divisional team voting is completed only by those coaches in the particular division. The all-conference and individual award voting is completed by all coaches.

Puig, a sophomore from Malaga, Spain, adds a USA South Player of the Year accolade to his career awards as he was also named Rookie of the Year last spring. Playing at both the number-one and number-two singles positions this season, including matches against three nationally-ranked NCAA DIII teams, Puig has posted a 14-4 overall record with a perfect 5-0 mark versus USA South opposition. Puig is currently the 20th ranked singles player in the ITA Division III Atlantic South Region rankings. At various doubles spots this season, Puig has teamed with two different partners to earn a 12-4 overall record with a 5-0 mark in League action. Puig and his primary doubles partner, senior Giannis Brokakis, are currently the fifth ranked doubles team in the ITA Division III Atlantic South Region rankings. For his efforts, Puig earned First Team All-Conference honors for the second consecutive year as well as First Team East Division accolades for the second straight spring. Finally, he collected USA South Player of the Week honors twice this season.

A freshman from Asuncion, Paraguay, Vallejo has compiled a 13-3 overall singles record with a 6-1 mark in USA South playing each of the top four positions. In doubles play, Vallejo has seen time at all three positions while teaming up with seven different partners to compile a 10-2 overall record with a 6-0 mark in League play. For his efforts this season, he collected Honorable Mention East Division honors. Finally, Vallejo was named USA South Rookie of the Week twice this year.

Brice, in his third year as the head coach of N.C. Wesleyan, received his second consecutive USA South Men's Tennis Coach of the Year honor. He has guided the Battling Bishops to a 21-2 overall record and the program's ninth consecutive year with an unblemished Conference record (10-0). N.C. Wesleyan collected its 11th straight League regular season title as the program has now won 114 consecutive matches over USA South opposition. The Battling Bishops are currently ranked 22nd in the latest ITA Division III national rankings and recently won the USA South Tournament for the 11th straight time by shutting out both of their opponents.

Other than Puig and Brokakis being named to the First Team All-Conferemnce, those two were joined by freshman Jhonny Acosta and senior J.D. Telles on the First Team East Division while Vallejo was also named as a Honorable Mention East Division member. Sophomore Aditya Iyer was then named to the All-Sportsmanship team as well while he clinched the tournament title for the Bishops on Sunday with his 6-1, 6-1 win.
