Men's & Women's Tennis Cruise past Shaw in Home Opener

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's and women's tennis teams both defeated D-2 foe Shaw University in their home openers on Tuesday. The men shut out Shaw 9-0 while the women won 6-3.

NCWM 9, SHAW 0

The Bishop men got off to a good start by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Wesleyan won by scores of 8-2, 8-2, and 8-4.

The Valentin duo then dominated their singles foes to clinch the match. Freshman Valentin Mussi won 6-0, 6-2 at the 4th spot while sophomore Valentin Ancieto won 6-1, 6-2 at the 5th spot. Sophomore Angel Vazquez also crushed his foe at the 6th spot 6-1, 6-3 while freshman John Falke defeated a former Bishop at the third line 6-2, 6-4. 

Junior Jhonny Acosta then won his bout 6-4, 6-4 at the 2 line before fellow junior Juan Vallejo closed out the shutout with his tight bout winning 7-6, 6-4 at the top line.

The women also got out to a quick 3-0 lead in doubles as the duo of freshman Stephanie Wilske and senior Ana Aguilar won 8-2 at the 2 line while the duo of senior Talitha Rowan and junior Giulia Zanetti won 8-5 at the top line. Junior Chandler Brice and freshman Julie Schoorsmans then won 8-4 at the third line. 

Zanetti and Brice then clinched the dual win for the Lady Bishops with their straight set wins at the 2 and 6 lines respectively. Zanetti won 6-2, 6-0 while Brice cruised 6-1, 6-1.

Also winning her singles bout was Wilske at the top line as she took it 7-5, 6-0. After Shaw won matches at the 3 and 4 lines, Aguilar then dropped a heartbreaker at the 5th line. She fell 6-7, 6-3, 8-10 in a third set tiebreak.

The Bishop men are now 3-2 on the season while the Lady Bishops improve to 1-2. The teams return to action on Friday (Men) and Saturday (Women) when they host the University of Mount Olive.
