ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team went on to upset 15th ranked Mary Washington (Va.) 8-1 at home on Sunday afternoon. This was the 7th straight win for the Bishops as they also shut out conference foe Mary Baldwin (Va.) 9-0 yesterday.

"The men had a historic win," commented head coach Albie Brice. "I am fairly confident this is NCWC Tennis' first win in school history against them. They are currently #15 in the nation. So far, we have taken out #21 Sewanee and #15 Mary Washington."

The Bishops got things rolling by sweeping the doubles 8-3, 8-1, and 8-7 as the #3 doubles team of junior Max Robinson and freshman Valentin Mussi edged out their opponents 8-7.

Then singles wins by Juan Vallejo at #2 (6-4, 6-2), Jhonny Acosta at #3 (6-1, 6-0) and Augusto Roca at #5 (6-1, 7-5) then clinched the win...but there were many significant wins in this match. Mussi also won his match at #6 singles 6-1, 7-6 while freshman John Falke won his match at #3 singles 6-3, 7-6. Suffering the only defeat for Wesleyan was senior Roberto Puig at the top line as he fell 4-6, 6-1, and 4-10 in the third set tiebreak.

This concluded a big week with impressive wins over Southern Virginia, Mary Washington, and a conference win against Mary Baldwin, who only had four healthy players to compete.

Wesleyan improves to 7-2 on the season and will next return to action on Monday to host D-2 foe Belmont Abbey at 1 and 3 pm.
