Men's Tennis Sweeps Belmont Abbey; Vallejo & Acosta Named Doubles Team of the Week

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team swept all three of their matches against D-2 foe Belmont Abbey on Monday afternoon from Rocky Mount.

The men's "A" team first won 8-1 over the Crusaders before Wesleyan's "B" team shut out the BAC second team 9-0. Finally, Wesleyan edged BAC 4-3 in Division 2 scoring in the thrid match.

Wesleyan now improves to 10-2 on the season having won 10 straight matches while BAC sits at 8-9.

The men were led by senior Roberto Puig as he won 6-2, 6-2 at #1 singles and teamed with freshman John Falke to win 8-3 at the top doubles line. Juniors Juan Vallejo and Johnny Acosta also won thier singles matches in straight sets and teamed together to win 8-6 in doubles after being named the USA South Doubles Team of the Week. Vallejo was also named the Conference Player of the Week as well.

Freshman Valentin Mussi also won easily in singles at the 5 spot while teaming with junior Max Robinson to win 8-1 in #3 doubles.

In the second match, Wesleyan's singles winners included Augusto Roca at the top line, Tshep Mosarwa in a three-set win at the 2 line while sophomores Thato Holmes, Thomas Trotta, Angel Vazquez, and freshman Vittorio Noli all won in straight sets.

Finally, winners in the third match included freshmen Joaquin Micheloni and Noli as well as sophomores Vazquez and Trotta.

The Bishops return to action on Wednesday to battle CNU (Va.) on the road at 2 pm.

Jhonny Acosta and Juan Vallejo, N.C. Wesleyan - The Battling Bishop duo earned a 2-0 record at the number-two doubles position last week, earning wins over opponents from Southern Virginia and 15th-ranked Mary Washington.

 

Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Juan Vallejo, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Asuncion, Paraguay earned a 2-0 record at both the number-two singles and doubles positions last week for the Battling Bishops. Each of his victories came over opponents from Southern Virginia and 15th-ranked Mary Washington. In doubles, Vallejo teamed with Jhonny Acosta for the two wins.
