Fayetteville, N.C. - In women's tennis action, NCWC freshman Sofia Prado went 4-0 in singles play to win the Flight #4 Championship at this weekend's Methodist Fall Invitational. Playing just her second collegiate tournament, Prado did not give up a set en route to wins over players from William Peace, Hollins, Mt. Olive and Barton.
Also fairing well in singles play was freshman Maria Fernanda Orona, who made a run to the title match of the Championship Flight consolation bracket. Orona knocked off USA South rival Isabella Graf of Methodist in straights (7-6, 7-6) before falling to Hollins' Victoria Coffee in a close third set tiebreak, 11-9.
In Flight #2 Rachel Hui managed a 3rd-place finish with a straight-set victory over Sam Munze of Methodist (6-1, 6-2), while Flight #3 saw Samantha Cachutt capture the back draw title by default. Flight #5 featured another solid performance by junior Katie Beeman, who bounced back from an opening round loss to tally a pair of straight-set wins over opponents from Emory & Henry and Bluefield en route to the consolation title.
In Flights #6 and #7, freshman Ariana Paz turned in a 4th-place showing, while sophomore Neryzza Calo finished in 3rd-place, respectively. Paz's victory came in straights over Mack Thompson from Meredith, and Calo posted an exciting 10-8 win in the third set to down Allison Morgan of Bluefield.
On the doubles side, Orona and sophomore Natalia Lopez teamed for a 3rd-place finish in the Championship Flight. The duo's lone defeat came at the hands of eventual champions Ceppi/Chouinard of Division II Mt. Olive. Orona/Lopez proceeded to bounce back with an 8-4 win over Barton's Kljajic/Lasry.
Elsewhere in doubles, Hui and Cachutt finished fourth in Flight #2, as did Prado and Beeman in Flight #3. Paz and Calo rounded out Wesleyan's portion of the bracket by winning the consolation title of Flight #4, cruising to an 8-2 victory over William Peace's Dixon/Wyse.
The Bishops have now completed their fall season and will begin preparations for the spring.
