Sorrentino Paces Bishop Tennis at Methodist Fall Invitational

Fayetteville, N.C. - The Battling Bishop women's tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule over the weekend, competing at the Methodist Inviational in Fayetteville. Leading the way was junior Florencia Sorrentino with a pair of consolation titles at the top singles and doubles flights.

Doubles play began on Friday with Sorrentino and sophomore Stephany Barbera dropping an 8-6 heartbreaker to MU's Munze/Landis in round one, then rebounding to win the consolation championship with a pair of 8-5 victories over players from Guilford and Meredith. In Flight #2, junior Ana Diaz teamed with freshman Nicole Halabi for an opening round win over Kelly/Avram of Barton, 8-4, before falling to Meredith's Barbour/Le in the second round by the same score.

Flight #3 saw junior Andrea Tobar and senior Leigh Hales also pick up an opening round win, cruising to an 8-1 victory over McDonald/Hopkins of Guilford. The Bishop duo proceeded to drop a pair of hard-fought matches to players from Meredith and Mount Olive to complete doubles action.

In singles play, Sorrentino fell to Barton's Vanessa Sanoja-Alvarez in the first round of the top draw, but as she did in doubles, she battled back to take the consolation championship with wins over players from Methodist, both in straights.

Barbera was a straight-set winner in the opening round Flight #2 before dropping two straight, while Halabi and Diaz each earned a pair of victories in Flights #3 and #4. Halabi made it to the main draw championship at #3, falling to Mount Olive's Alejandra Hernandez 10-5 in a third set tiebreaker.

Tobar earned NCWC's final two singles win in Flight #5, earning victories over players from Methodist and Barton.

The Bishops will now prepare to host their own fall invitational this weekend at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center. Play is set to open on Friday afternoon.
