Amedieva Named USA South Women's Tennis Player & Rookie of the Week

NC Wesleyan women's tennis freshman Milena Amedieva was named as the USA South Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Milena Amedieva, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Samarkand, Uzbekistan earned a 2-0 singles and doubles record last week for the Battling Bishops. Amedieva collected singles victories over the 21st-ranked player in the country, Heidi Sarkkinen, of USA South foe Averett, as well as an opponent from nationally-ranked College of New Jersey. She edged out 12 other nominees for the awards.

Amedieva won a thrilling bout with Sarkkinen on Wednesday 7-6, 7-6 to hand the Averett foe her first dual loss. Amedieva then controlled her match on Sunday with TCNJ by winning 6-3 and 6-2 at the #2 spot for the Bishops by helping them defeat the #28 College of New Jersey for the program's first win over a ranked opponent.

In doubles, Amedieva teamed with Fariza Abdulloeva to earn the two wins 8-3 and 8-4. She is now 10-5 on the season and 8-4 in duals as the Lady Bishops improve to 9-4 on the season. The women are next in action on Wednesday when they go to Meredith College at 4 PM.
