Bishops Celebrate Senior Night with Five-Set Victory

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan volleyball team celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday with a come-from-behind five-set victory over USA South rival Methodist University (18-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-11). Prior to the match, head coach Robin Pietryk and her squad honored the two senior members of their squad: Heather Hunter and Taylor Johnson.

After dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-23, the Battling Bishops came to life in the third and fourth with 11 kills in each set.

In the fifth and deciding set, Wesleyan pulled out to an 8-4 lead at the switch, with the Bishops getting kills from five different players during the stretch. Methodist would eventually fight off four match points before Johnson's seventh kill of the night secured the win for the Bishops.

Freshman Tori Stewart paced Wesleyan with a team-high 16 kills, while sophomore Kayla White turned in a double-double of 29 assists and 17 digs. Libero Christina Huber chipped in 19 digs, and Hunter finished with 11.

The difference in the match came at the net, where the Bishops recorded a season-high 15 blocks. Freshman Alani Wiggins had nine of those stops (1 solo, 8 assists) and Stewart eight (2 solo, 6 assists). Wesleyan also notched 13 service aces on the night.

NCWC (7-21, 6-11 USA South) wraps up their regular season schedule on Sunday when the Bishops host a league Play Day with Piedmont and William Peace. Matches are slated for 12:00pm, 2:00pm and 4:00pm in Everett Gym.
