Volleyball picks up 2 wins at Huntington Tournament

HUNTINGTON, Ala.- The NC Wesleyan Volleyball team picked up two wins over the weekend at the Huntington College Tournament. Wesleyan dominated both of their Saturday opponents topping USA South West Div. foe Agnes Scott College (Ga.) in 3 sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-21) Saturday morning and also crushing their afternoon non-conference foe Mississippi University for Women in 3 sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) as well.

Sophomore OH Callie Cline led the offense in the Agnes Scott match with 9 kills and 2 aces hitting. 241 while freshman middle blocker Lauren Weaver recorded 9 kills with just one error (.500 attack %) and 4 blocks in the win. Augusta Preston also had five kills and just one error. Weaver was also named to the all-tournament team as weell for her efforts over the weekend. She tallied 29 kills and 14 total blocks on the weekend.

Hannah Thrasher and Sydney Barnwell also each tallied five kills and 3 blocks apiece. Defensively, libero Devin Lassiter and DS Hannah Huls each registered 13 digs apiece with Huls adding four aces as well. Setters Haileigh Riesenbeck and Kelly Ammons also combined for 24 assists and 12 digs.

NCWC 3, MUW 0

Cline and Thrasher both played terrific in the MUW win as well. Cline led the offense with an impressive 14 kills on just one error as she hit .591 with 15 digs, an ace and two assists for a double-double while Thrasher had 9 kills with just one error to hit .471.

The setting duo of Ammons and Riesenbeck also combined for 32 assists while Huls added 14 digs and two aces.

The Bishops totaled 38 kills in the match and hit .202 as a team to improve to 4-6 on the weekend as they dropped their first two matches on Friday. They fell in a heartbreaking five set thriller to host Huntington (4-2) on Friday evening. NCWC won the first two sets 25-22 and 29-27, but Huntington came back to take the final three sets 25-17, 25-16, and 15-9. Weaver ended up leading with 12 kills and 6 blocks. The Bishops also had four different players finish in double-digit digs: Cline, Lassiter, Huls, and Riesenbeck.

NCWC went 2-2 over the weekend as they also fell to Div. II Auburn-Montgomery University (Ala.) in their first game of the weekend on Friday in 3 sets (16-25, 20-25, 15-25). Lassiter ended up with 14 digs and 50 for the weekend.

Wesleyan is next in action on Friday when they head to Guilford College (N.C.) for a 6:30 tilt.
