Chontae Uptegrow staked her claim as one of the greatest outfielders to ever sport the Blue & Gold by being honored as a four-time All-Region, All-Conference AND All-Tournament selection from 1998 to 2001. Uptegrow, in fact, remains the only player in Battling Bishop history to garner Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-East Region accolades on four occasions.

Uptegrow kicked off her Battling Bishop tenure in the spring of 1998 with a stellar freshman campaign that saw her turn in a career-best .419 batting average. She followed up with Most Valuable Player honors as a sophomore, while her junior and season seasons saw her garner back-to-back First Team All-Conference nods and culminated with her being named the 2001 NCWC Female Athlete of the Year. A career .368 hitter, she remains the program’s all-time leader in at-bats with 519, while her 191 hits and 128 runs scored were program-bests at the time of her graduation. Additionally, Uptegrow lettered in basketball for three seasons under Hall of Fame Coach John Brackett, and her 537 career rebounds rank in Wesleyan’s top-10 all-time.

While Uptegrow achieved many individual accomplishments, she is also remembered for the role she played on some of the most successful teams in Wesleyan history. She enjoyed four straight winning seasons in softball, helping her team to a pair of regular season conference titles (’98, ‘99), two conference tournament crowns (’98, ’99) and two NCAA berths (’98, ’99). Her 1998 team posted a program-record 31 wins, while her 1999 team set program-bests for hits (400), doubles (77) and RBIs (250). Overall, Uptegrow’s teams turned in a 107-59 record in softball, while in basketball, she was a key member of Brackett’s 1998-99 team that captured the conference tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round.

Over the years, Uptegrow’s career has twice been recognized by the USA South (formerly Dixie). In 2006, the Nassawadox, Va. native was named to the league’s Silver Anniversary softball team, while most recently in 2014, she was named to the USA South’s 50-Year Anniversary squad. A 2001 graduate, she currently serves as a Material Specialist for Siemens Healthcare.
