Bishops Open Week with USA South Honors and UMW Tilt

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop baseball team was back in action on Monday afternoon at Bauer Field, dropping an 11-9 decision to the University of Mary Washington in extra innings. Senior Kaelan Jacobs blasted a three-run homerun to right field with two outs in the ninth to knot the game at 9-9 and force extras. Unfortunately, the 29th-ranked Eagles (8-0) plated a pair of runs in the tenth to escape with the win and remain undefeated on the season.

Earlier the day, Wesleyan learned that senior James Lovett and freshman Trey Croom were named the USA South's Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the second time this season.

Baseball Player of the Week
James Lovett, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior catcher from West Palm Beach, Florida went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) with a slugging percentage of 1.000, six RBIs, two runs scored, two homeruns and one walk as the Bishops posted a 3-3 record last week. In a 4-2 loss to St. Andrews, Lovett was 2-for-4, while in a doubleheader split with Washington & Lee, he was a combined 2-for-2 with three RBIs, one run scored and one homer. Finally, in taking two out of three games from USA South foe Averett, Lovett went a combined 6-for-10 with three RBIs, one run scored, one homerun and one walk.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Trey Croom, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman third baseman from Wilmington, North Carolina went a combined 12-for-24 (.500) with six runs scored, four RBIs, two doubles and three walks last week. Versus Washington & Lee, Croom was a combined 4-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and one double, while in NCWC's series win at AU, he went a combined 8-for-15 with four runs scored, two RBIs, one double and three walks.

Wesleyan (10-5) returns to USA South action this weekend with a three-game set versus William Peace University at Bauer Field. Friday's opener is slated for a 2:30pm start.
