Wesleyan Explodes For 11 Runs, Advances to Winner's Bracket in NCAA Tournament

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan baseball program defeated Elizabethtown in the first NCAA Tournament game at Bauer Field since 2006 11-3.

Score: N.C. Wesleyan 11, Elizabethtown, 3

Location: N.C. Wesleyan University /  Rocky Mount, N.C.  /  Bauer Field

Records: N.C. Wesleyan (36-8), Elizabethtown (31-12)

How it Happened:

  • Wesleyan jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first with a leadoff walk and a rope shot down the third base line by Tyson Bass for the first Bishop RBI in the NCAA Tournament in over two years.
  • He would be followed up by Colin Scoggins who got in on the action with an RBI double of his own to open up the flood gates for the Battling Bishops
  • The third and fourth innings would see Wesleyan break the game open with three more runs off the bats of Davie Morgan and Alex Moskel showing the offense's power to drive the ball gap to gap.
  • In the fifth Zach Lyon would join the hit parade with a single into center field that scored Colin Scoggins.
  • Senior Payne Stolsworth got the start for the Battling Bishops and threw seven innings allowing one earned one and striking out five Blue Jays.
  • Stolsworth's win puts him one away from history, as a record of 13-0 would tie him for the wins record in N.C. Wesleyan history.

Up Next: The Battling Bishops will be back in action tomorrow at 2:30 for the winner's bracket contest against #1 Lynchburg.
