Wesleyan Posts Pair of Victories in Series Win at Covenant

Lookout Mountain, Ga. - Wesleyan's baseball team won its third straight USA South series over the weekend, taking two of three contests on the road at Covenant College. Saturday's finale saw junior Tony Sanchez go 3-for-5 with a homerun and three RBIs.

Sanchez's homer came in the top of a three-run sixth inning that ended with the scored tied 4-4. Senior Ciro Norzagaray also came up big in the frame, delievering a two-out, two-run single through the left side that plated the tying run. Norzagaray later scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth, and Sanchez followed suit with a two-run single that secured the 7-4 final.

Senior Andrew Franklin (1-0) picked up the win in relief, holding the Scots hitless over his 2.2 innings of work. Junior Joseph Borgerding also turned in a solid performance with three innings of shutout baseball prior to Franklin taking the hill.

Saturday's win followed a doubleheader split on Friday. Covenant took the opener by a 10-3 tally, handing junior hurler Ryan Grant (4-1) his first loss of the season. The Bishops, however, bounced back with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. Pitchers T.J. Wilkie, Dillon Moore, Austin Bain, and Norzagaray combined to hold CC to just four hits in the contest, with Moore (1-1) earning the win and Norzagaray (3) the save.

Offensively, senior James Lovett went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer.

Wesleyan is now 15-6 overall and 7-2 in USA South play. The Bishops are set to host St. Andrews University on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:00pm at Bauer Field.
