USA South Announces Postseason Baseball Awards

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2016 postseason awards in the sport of baseball. Among 43 honorees were five Battling Bishops, led by Rookie of the Year honors for freshman third baseman Trey Croom.

Croom, who hails from Wilmington, N.C., has compiled a .324 batting average, a .378 on-base percentage, and a .460 slugging percentage so far this season. He has also totaled 33 RBIs, which currently rank seventh in the conference, 24 runs scored, ten doubles, and three homeruns. In league-action only, he raised his batting average to .333 and his on-base percentage to .412 en route to a trio of USA South Rookie of the Week awards this spring. For his efforts, Croom collected Honorable Mention accolades at third base.

Highlighting Wesleyan's All-Conference selections were seniors James Lovett and Ciro Norzagaray as First Team picks. Lovett was honored at designated hitter and currently leads the Bishops in batting average (.378), slugging percentage (.689), RBIs (35), and homeruns (9). Norzagaray becomes a four-time All-Conference honoree after boasting a team-best .403 batting average in league play. He has also blasted four homers and drove in 30 runs, while posting a 1.86 ERA on the mound with four saves thusfar.

Additionally, freshman Brandon Wheat garnered Second team accolades at catcher. Wheat hit .353 in USA South games with an impressive .982 fielding percentage behind the plate, throwing out 50 percent of would-be basestealers in the process.

Rounding out NCWC's honorees was senior James Kornegay as a member of the league's All-Sportsmanship team.

Elsewhere around the conference, LaGrange's Blake Butcher was named Player of the Year, while the Ferrum trio of Jake Perkins, Hunter Peck, and Ryan Brittle earned Pitcher of the Year, Rookie Pitcher of the Year, and Coach of the Year, respectively.
