Baseball Takes First 2 games from Averett

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Baseball team took the first two games of their conference series with Averett University (Va.) on Saturday in Rocky Mount. Wesleyan won game one 7-4 behind starter Brynner Porter's 8 quality innings while the Bishops then dominated game two 16-4 in 7 innings.

Senior LF Logan Andrews broke the scoreless tie in the 5th inning getting the Bishops on the board with his RBI single. Junior 1B Brad Pennington then made it 3-0 with his two-run single. Senior CF Cedrick Kornegay then finished the inning with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Pennington and Andrews would then drive in more runs in the 7th on RBI singles before RF Logan Jackson made it 7-1 with his RBI single.

Porter ended up throwing 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 4 runs on a walk and 6 strikeouts to get the win improving to 5-1. Andrews and Pennington led the Bishops with 3 hits apiece while Jackson also had a multi-hit game as part of their 10-hit attack.

NCWC 16, AVERETT 4

Wesleyan then poured on the offense in game two as they cruised to the 12 run win after falling behind 4-2 early. The Bishops used a 9-run fifth inning to go on and win 16-4 improving to 20-9 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

Kornegay got the Bishops on the board with his RBI triple in the first inning after Wesleyan fell behind 3-0 to the Cougars. Wesleyan would then tie it at 4 in the second as Kornegay doubled in two runs. Junior SS Alec Titmus then gave the Bishops the lead with his RBI double in the 4th inning as Wesleyan would go on to outscore Averett 14-0 after the top of the 2nd.

The 5th inning scoring began with catcher Nick Beaver walking to bring in senior 3B Trey Croom. Jackson followed with an RBI single to make it 8-4 Bishops. After an Averett error made it 9-4, back-to-back RBI singles from Kornegay and Croom then made it 11-4. Freshman DH Jackson Murray's three-run triple then finished the 9-run inning and gave Wesleyan a 14-4 lead after five.

Trey Posilero's two-run single in the 6th then clinched the win for the Bishops. Kornegay ended up going 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs and finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

Sophomore starter Drew Tubb threw 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 4 runs on 2 walks and 6 strikeouts to improve to 5-0 on the year. Relievers Luke Mills and Chris Aubry then threw consecutive scoreless innings to close out the win for NCWC. 

The Bishops will finish their series with Averett on Sunday afternoon with a 2 PM first pitch from Bauer Field.
