ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Baseball team finished off a three-game conference series sweep of Averett University (Va.) by winning 4-1 in game three on Sunday afternoon.

Senior starting pitcher Nate Gardner helped lead the Bishops to the win by pitching 8 stellar innings allowing just 4 hits and one run on 2 walks and five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Senior 1B Trey Croom led the Bishops to the win offensively by going 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs. Croom started off the scoring with his RBI double in the first inning that drove in junior 2B Brad Pennington, who led off the game with a single. Croom then also tripled to right in the third inning to again drive in Pennington to make it 2-0 Bishops.

After Averett got one back in the 6th, Croom then delivered again for the Bishops in the 7th driving in senior CF Cedrick Kornegay with a single. Croom would end up falling just a homer shy of hitting for the cycle as he is now hitting .333 with 24 RBIs. Kornegay then capped the scoring in the 8th inning as he drove in junior SS Alec Titmus with a single. Kornegay and Pennington joined Croom with multi-hit games while LF Luke Mills also added a double on the afternoon. Catcher Brandon Wheat and freshman DH Jackson Murray recorded singles on the day as well.

Junior reliever Noah Shrock came on in the 9th to close the game with a scoreless inning including two strikeouts to pick up his 5th save.

Wesleyan improves to 21-9 on the year and 12-5 in the conference while Averett drops to 6-27 and 3-15 in conference. The Bishops are next in action on Wednesday as they will head to Virginia Wesleyan to battle the Marlins in a 3:00 PM game. NCWC then returns home Friday to host Piedmont College.
