Baseball Finishes off Sweep of SVU

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College baseball team rolled to a series sweep of conference foe Southern Virginia University by ousting them 7-0 in the first game Saturday and then 12-5 in the second game.

Wesleyan improves to 10-8 on the season and 3-0 in the East Division. SVU falls to 3-6.

Game 1: NCWC 7, SVU 0

The Bishops first used a dominating pitching performance from sophomore starter Danny Thompson as he threw a complete game of 7 shutout innings allowing just two hits and 3 walks while striking out six.

Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead after two innings scoring on an Emry Jackson RBI groundout and a Jean Lagreca RBI single. The Bishops then scored 5 in the 6th inning to put the game away. it began with a Davie Morgan RBI single scoring Tyson Bass before a two-run single from sophomore DH Zach Scott then made it 5-0. A sacrifice fly from Jackson then drove in LF Zach Lyon before Lagreca reached via error driving in Scott.

The Bishops received two-hit games from junior CF Drifton Padgett and Scott.

GAME 2:  NCWC 12, SVU 5

The Bishops then used 12 runs and 16 hits for another big conference win in game two. Padgett, Scott and freshman RF Cord Butler all led the Bishops with three-hit games while Padgett knocked a double and drove in three runs. Junior 3B Jackson Hobbs also hit a solo home run in the 6th inning.

Recording RBI singles were Bass, catcher Jaiden Barker, Padgett and Scott while Butler and Padgett also hit RBI doubles in the win. Wesleyan led just 7-5 after three innings as SVU knocked Bishop senior starter Drew Tubb out of the game after 3 innings. Tubb allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and walks over 3 innings. Reliever Chandler Padgett then came into the game in the 4th and finished it out with four shutout innings allowing just 2 hits and a walk while striking out three.

Wesleyan then added a run in the 4th and two each in the 6th and 7th innings for the 12-5 final.

The Bishops will return to action on Friday when they come home to host Pfeiffer University in a 3 PM contest.
