Rocky Mount, N.C. - Despite a career-high 320 passing yards by sophomore Robbie Lanier and 180 rushing yards by junior Jacques Alston, it was the Pride of Greensboro College who came out on top of a 44-42 gridiron shootout with the Battling Bishops on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Rocky Mount Athletic Stadium.

In the first half, Wesleyan dug an early 10-point hole after fumbling Greensboro's first punt, which resulted in a 27-yard field goal by Luis Rico, and then having their own punt blocked for a touchdown on the ensuing possession. The Bishops countered, however, with 14 straight points as Lanier excuted drives from 78 and 62 yards on Wesleyan's next two possessions. He capped the first with a 4-yard scoring pass to freshman Elgin Counts, while Alston capped the second with a 9-yard scamper that made it 14-10 Bishops early in the second quarter.

Unfortunately, the Pride answered with 14 of their own -- the first coming on an 11-yard strike from QB Ryan Throndset to Dexter Russell, and the second featuring a Throndset-to-Russell 14-yarder that came after a second blocked punt by the Pride's Kyle Smith. With GC up 24-14, Alston hushed the Greensboro sideline on the game's very next play when he broke free for a 77-yard scoring run up the right sideline.

The Pride managed to tack on one more score before the half on a 5-yard run by Cortez Vernon. The missed point-after sent the two squads into the break with Greensboro leading 30-21.

In the second half, Wesleyan took the opening kickoff and drove down to the GC-11, only to see Chris Richardson's 28-yard field goal attempt miss wide left. The Bishop defense, however, forced a fumble on the Pride's next possession, and four plays later, Lanier took the ball in from one yard out to make the score 30-28.

From there, the two squads traded touchdowns the rest of the way en route to the 44-42 final. Lanier threw 9- and 14-yard TD passes to senior Greg Edwards and sophomore John Young, respectively -- the latter coming with just under five minutes left in regulation. The Pride proceeded to go 3-for-3 on third down conversions on their final possession to effectively run out the clock and hold on for the victory.

Lanier finished 24-of-33 through the air for 320 yards and three touchdowns, with Young hauling in seven catches for a career-high 137 yards. Freshman Rocky Carlisle had eight tackles and Xavier Bell two sacks to pace the defensive effort. As a team, the Bishops amassed 516 yards of total offense to the Pride's 397.

The Battling Bishops (1-6, 1-3 USA South) hit the road next Saturday for a USA South match-up at Huntingdon College. Kickoff is slated for 1:00pm CST (2:00pm EST).
