Averett Takes Two from Wesleyan in USA South Play

Danville, Va. - Averett University took two games from N.C. Wesleyan in Friday's USA South softball action, downing the Bishops in the opener by a 5-4 score in extras before posting a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. The games were the final USA South contests of the season.

The first game saw the Bishops open up a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth. Wesleyan had plated a trio of runs in the second thanks to a Brittni Jones RBI that was later followed by a two-run single by Logan Tollison. Sophomore Maria Seay drove in a fourth run in the fifth with an infield single.

Averett, however, scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, two of which were unearned after a Bishop fielding error extended the inning. The Cougars proceeded tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh and later won it in the eighth.

In the second game, the Cougars (16-20, 8-10 USA South) got all the offense they would need with four runs in their first at-bat.  All four runs were unearned as the Bishops made three crucial fielding errors in the inning.

AU plated insurance runs in the fourth and fifth, while the Bishops' scored single runs in the first and fourth. Carla Matthews and Amanda Warley each ripped RBI-doubles, and Tollison was a team-best 3-for-4 at the plate.

Despite Wesleyan's 13 conference losses, it should be noted that five of those came in one-run defeats and three came in extra innings. For that reason, fans of the 9th-seeded Bishops can look forward to an exciting USA South Tournament in Burlington next week.

Prior to the tourney, however, NCWC (16-16, 5-13 USA South) wraps up its regular season slate on Tuesday at Virginia Wesleyan. The opener is slated for a 3:00pm start.
