Wesleyan Splits with Maryville, Swept by Ferrum

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop softball team hosted a pair of USA South twinbills this weekend, splitting a two-game set with Maryville on Friday before suffering a sweep by Ferrum on Saturday. Prior to Saturday's opener, Wesleyan honored 2013 Parent's Day.

On Friday, the Bishops bounced back from a 9-6 loss in game one to secure a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. Sophomore Kelsi Bailey (4-4) turned in a solid performance in the circle, allowing just one run on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts en route to the win.

Offensively, the Bishops took an early 2-0 lead in the second and later made it 5-0 with three runs in the fifth, highlighed by an RBI-single by freshman Jasmine Edgren and a two-run homerun by junior Paige Pritchett. Pritchett, Carly Creef and Carla Matthews all finished with two hits apiece.

Saturday saw the Bishops come up just short in the opener versus Ferrum, 3-2.

Down 3-0 in the sixth, Pritchett delivered a two-out double to right-center to pull the Bishops to within one. Wesleyan proceeded to load the bases that same inning, but Panther reliever Rachel Shumaker got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.

Wesleyan again threatened in the seventh, placing the tying and winning runs at second and third with two outs. Shumaker delivered once more, however, forcing a fly-out to left to the end the game and secure Ferrum's one-run win.

NCWC hurler Leanna Fann (3-6) suffered the tough loss, despite giving up just three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

Ferrum went on to earn a 7-4 win in the finale. Matthews paced the Bishops with a pair of hits, while sophomore Kendra Hoes blasted her fourth homerun of the season.

Wesleyan (8-12, 5-9 USA South) takes a break from USA South play on Wednesday when the Bishops host Guilford College. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm at Edge Field.
