Rocky Mount, N.C. - Senior Maria Seay went 5-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two sacrifice hits to help her Battling Bishop softball team secure a USA South sweep of Maryville College on Sunday afternoon at Edge Field. Wesleyan took the opener by an 8-6 score before tallying an 8-3 victory in game two.

In game one, the Bishops opened up a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat thanks, in part, to a two-run double by Seay. Wesleyan would never trail in the contest, although Maryville got as close as 7-6 with two runs in the fifth. Freshman Brittany Manning answered with an RBI-triple in the sixth to give NCWC an insurance run, and senior hurler Leanna Fann shut down the Scots in the seventh for the 8-6 final.

Fann (3-3) went the distance, allowing six runs (three earned) over seven complete. Seniors Carly Creef, Brittni Jones, Paige Pritchett and Seay had two hits apiece to pace the Bishops.

The nightcap saw the Scots scratch a run in the opening frame, but the Bishops responded with a pair of runs in each of their first two at-bats. Pritchett got things going with a two-run homer in the first, while sophomore Jasmine Edgren delivered a two-run single in the second for an early 4-1 lead.

Both teams plated single runs in the fourth before NCWC pulled away with a three-spot in the fifth, highlighted by a solo homerun by junior Kendra Hoes. Edgren (3-3) went on to pick up her third win in the circle, giving up three runs (two earned) with a trio of Ks.

The Bishops tallied 14 hits as team, led by Seay going 3-for-3. Creef also recorded three hits with two runs scored.

Wesleyan (7-9, 2-2 USA South) continues USA South play at home on Wednesday when league rival Methodist University visits Edge Field. Game one is slated for 2:00pm.
