Softball Sweeps Methodist for Fourth Straight Win

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's softball team turned in its second straight USA South conference sweep on Tuesday afternoon, downing Methodist University by 5-4 and 8-3 scores at Edge Field. Freshmen Brittany and Tiffany Manning each drew bases loaded walks in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal the game one win, while senior Carly Creef went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the nightcap.

In the opener, senior Paige Pritchett gave the Bishops at 3-1 lead with a three-run double in the fifth, only to see the Monarchs battle back to force extras with two-spot in the sixth.

Playing under the international tiebreak rule, Methodist scratched a run in the top of the eighth before seeing their at-bat end with NCWC's Brittni Jones tagging out a second runner at the plate. Wesleyan answered with a pair of scores in their half of the frame, thanks to a single and trio of walks that doomed the Monarchs.

Jones finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while sophomore Jasmine Edgren went 2-for-4. Senior pitcher Leanna Fann (4-3) picked up win win, tossing eight innings and giving up four runs (three earned).

In game two, the Bishops capitalized on a pair of crucial Monarchs errors to plate three unearned runs in the second and erase an early deficit. Wesleyan went on to score five unanswered runs in the third and fifth to provide the 8-3 final.

Edgren (4-3) went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits en route to her fourth win of the season. Offensively, the Manning sisters went a combined 3-for-6 with four runs scored.

Now winners of four straight, the Bishops stand at 9-9 overall and 4-2 in USA South action. Wesleyan continues league play at 1:00pm on Saturday at Ferrum College.
