Lookout Mtn. / Demorest, Ga. - Junior Jasmine Edgren went 9-for-13 with five RBIs and four runs scored to lead her N.C. Wesleyan softball team to a trio of USA South road wins this weekend. The Battling Bishops swept Covenant on Saturday, then earned a conference split at Piedmont on Sunday. In addition to her offensive performance, Edgren also went 2-0 in the circle.

Against Covenant on Saturday, the Bishops posted 6-3 and 11-0 wins. The opener saw the Scots jump out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in their first two at-bats. NCWC's Peyton Hyler singled home Brittany Manning in the third to cut the lead in half, and fellow freshman Kaitlyn Checkan evened the score with an RBI-single in the fourth. The two teams went on to trade runs in their next two at-bats to set up a 3-3 tie entering the late innings.

In the seventh, senior Sarah Roberts led off with a single, which was followed by a costly fielding error and a Sarah Bowyer sac-bunt that placed runners at second and third with one out. Hyler promptly drove home Roberts with the eventual game-winning run, and Edgren capped the inning with a bases loaded single to left that plated two runs and gave NCWC a 6-3 lead.

Edgren took care of the rest in the circle, completing a solid performance by sitting down three of the four batters she faced in the bottom of the frame. She allowed three runs (two earned) on ten hits over seven complete, while offensively, she finished 4-for-4 at the plate.

Game two was all Wesleyan in a 5-inning rout. Freshman hurler Logan Lowery tossed the second one-hitter of her career, while Bowyer and senior Kendra Hoes blasted their first homers of the season with back-to-back blasts in the second.

On Sunday at Piedmont, Wesleyan took game one by a 9-5 score before dropping game two by a 2-1 tally. In the first game, Hoes and Bowyer each drove in runs in top of the first only to see the Lions plate five unanswered over the next four innings.

Down 5-2 in the fifth, the Bishops erupted for six runs on four hits as five different players collected RBIs (Checkan, Bowyer, Carla Matthews, Edgren-2 and Tiffany Manning). Wesleyan added an insurance run in the seventh after Matthews singled and eventually scored on a Lion fielding error.

Edgren (7-2) again picked up the win, allowing five runs on six hits over six innings of work, while Lowery tossed a scoreless seventh. Offensively, Checkan, Roberts, Edgren and Manning ripped two hits apiece.

The nightcap proved to be a pitchers dual. Lowery suffered yet another tough one-run loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings pitched. Matthews had two of the Bishops five hits as a team.

Wesleyan (9-11, 5-7 USA South) continues league play on Monday with a doubleheader at Maryville College. Game one is slated for a 1:00pm start.
