Bishop Softball Sweeps Averett, Tallies League Split at Methodist

Rocky Mount, N.C. / Fayetteville, N.C. - The Battling Bishop softball team picked up a trio of USA South wins on Tuesday and Wednesday, sweeping Averett University at Edge Field before splitting at Methodist University in Fayetteville, respectively.

Versus Averett on Tuesday, the Bishops were 7-5 and 4-2 winners. In the opener, the Bishops took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a 3-run homerun by junior Kaitlyn Checkan. The Cougars answered with a 3-spot in the third, but NCWC added a trio of insurance runs in the fourth, with sophomore Shelby Godwin doing part of the damage with a 2-run double to right. Averett managed single runs in the sixth and seventh to provide the 7-5 final.

Junior Logan Lowery picked up the victory in the circle, giving up five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Offensively, Godwin finished 3-for-4 while Sarah Bowyer and Tiffany Manning tallied two hits apiece.

Game two featured a pitcher's dual between Godwin and AU's Kaitlyn Aherron. Scoreless through four complete, the Cougars got on the board first with an RBI-groundout in the fifth. Wesleyan countered with an RBI-double from Brittany Manning, only to see AU scratch another run in the sixth for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the frame, however, senior Lindsey Sharpe tied the score with an RBI-double that plated Bowyer. Checkan then drove in the game-winning runs with a single through the left side.

The 4-2 win went to Godwin on the mound, with Lowery earning her first save of the season after tossing a scoreless seventh. At the plate, Godwin and junior Peyton Hyler each went 2-for-3.

At Methodist on Wednesday, Lowery (7-8) threw a complete game shutout in the opener, scattering three hits and striking out eight. Junior Alicia Burns provided the bulk of the offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in the 4-0 victory.

The nightcap was once again a pitcher's dual for Godwin (4-6), who gave up just one run on three hits in the complete game effort. Her offense, unfortunately, managed just four hits and could not scratch a run as the Bishops fell in a 1-0 heartbreaker.

Wesleyan now stands at 7-7 in USA South play heading into a pair of home doubleheaders this weekend at Edge Field. The Bishops will host Wesleyan (Ga.) on Saturday at 1:00pm, followed by Agnes Scott College on Sunday at noon.
