Softball Splits DH at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team split their road doubleheader at West Division foe Brevard College (NC) on Friday afternoon shutting out the Tornados in game one, 4-0 before falling 3-2 in game two.

Sophomore pitcher Beth Braswell helped lead the Bishops to a win by pitching a complete-game shutout allowing just 2 hits over 7 innings with 4 walks and 9 strikeouts.

Wesleyan scored one run each in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. Sophomore shortstop Meredith Mize drove in a run with her single in the 2nd while freshman Brianna Myers knocked an RBI single in the third. Senior outfielder Hannah Ivester then drove in the third run with her single while sophomore 1B Bryona Knight drove in the final run on her single in the 5th.

Sophomore Catcher Kayla Molivas led the offense with a triple among her two hits while Mize also had two hits and recorded a double. Fellow infielder Meredith Booth also had a multi-hit game in the win as well as Wesleyan outhit Brevard 10-2.

In game two, the Bishops were led by solo home runs from Braswell and sophomore 3B Chelsea Nixon. Braswell's first homer of the season tied the game in the second inning while Nixon's homer trimmed BC's lead to one in the 5th. However, Wesleyan could not push across that extra run needed for the tie or the win.

Senior starter Shelby Godwin also pitched well allowing only 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits over 6 innings with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Wesleyan had 7 different ladies record hits on the day but no other extra base hits other than the home runs as Wesleyan would fall to 1-2 on the season while Brevard improved to 2-3.

NCWC is right back in action on Saturday when they travel to Georgia to battle another West Division foe in Piedmont College in a 1 PM DH.
